The museum also allows a number of dancers and performers to display their talents on weekends and some week days.

Milwaukee may not seem like the most exciting destination for your vacation. But isn't a vacation supposed to be relaxing? A common situation that many parents face is dealing with their children's behaviors. For example, let's say you had a five year old child that has just entered school. She was a polite, considerate, and helpful young lady at home and in front of her teachers. However, her behavior has recently changed at home and it involves talking back, swearing, and discussing sex in general terms. She learned these behaviors from other kids at school.

You might not sure how I should teach her to make the right choices about right vs. wrong. She has already missed school at the insistence of her 5 year old friend. HOw can you help her when she is not under your watchful eye at school? How do I ensure she will make the right choice on her own?

That is a great question. First we should discuss the fundamentals regarding this issue.

Kids, like you and me, are doing their best to succeed in life. So their behaviors are their attempts to get good results for themselves, as they themselves would define them. Those "good results" might be to satisfy basic urges such as hunger and warmth, they might be to get approval and love - from their parents, or from their friends, or they might be simply to have fun and excitement.

Whatever their priority need at the time, the behavior they use is their best attempt to meet the need.

They will find that their behaviors don't always result in success. They learn from this and experiment with other behaviors until they find the ones that yield the desired result. When deciding what behavior to have we rely on experience, direction for our parents, and our skills and abilities. We create a group of behaviors that we hope will serve our needs effectively.

After experimenting we will find the behaviors that meet our needs. We will use these behaviors to get what we want. The more we achieve a good result with a behavior, the more we demonstrate that behavior.

Back to your 5 year old daughter. Her behavior signals that she is in the process of trial and error. She is in a new situation at school and this has expanded her world. She is not sure how to react and is excited and nervous at the same time. She is testing different behaviors to determine which behaviors will yield a successful result.

Your daughter will most likely try a range of behaviors. Many of which will not occur ever again as they didn't work. Some behaviors will become a part of her usual behavior. Which behaviors will your daughter stick to? It really depends on the results of each experience. She is at an age where having your approval and love is very important to her. She needs to see your reaction to her behaviors. Outside reactions from others also play a role. For example, punishments and rewards can be a big influence on her behavior. She will seek the approval of you, her teachers, and her friends.

You have a significant affect on her as her parent. She young so she will listen to you. When she is a teenager things will change. Your influence can show in two ways.

1. Your emotional response - your approval or otherwise of her behaviors.

2. Your manipulation of her environment. You have the power to choose her school, neighbors, and people she will be in contact with. You are the one who can give her punishments and rewards.

Integrating what he discussed together and looking at this logically, you need to answer the following questions:

Do you think your daughter is just experimenting with her behaviors and that it will pass? If you do, then don't worry about it at all as she will move on to better behavior. Kids tend to do mischievous things at this age and still end up to be productive adults.

Bear in mind that if you over-react to things like her swearing that may, in itself, actually make the behavior seems MORE exciting rather than less. Generally, "chilling out" is the better way to go.

If you think that her bad behavior is escalating too much then you need to do something to thwart it.

At this point you will need to rely on your judgement of the situation. Are you doing all the things you can as a parent? Make sure that you are a positive role model. Remember, you have a significant influence on her.

Check out the school and your neighborhood. How have the children who were raised in this neighborhood do when they grew up? Do they become productive adults or do most of the kids spend their days being in trouble for most of their teenage years?

Take the time to talk with parents and teachers at school. Each school has a culture and perhaps your daughter is trying to fit into this culture. How concerned are the teachers? Does the behavior of most kids at the school improve as they grow up out their phases?

You cannot control every factor in their lives. You cannot guarantee that they will learn right from wrong. But you can increase the chances. And, as ever, you do that by being as good, and strategic, a parent as you can.

Candlemaking for Everyone

To begin, melt wax at 200 degrees Fahrenheit in a double boiler. Stir the wax while it is heating. Add color and/or fragrance if you'd like. Add two teaspoons of translucent crystals per one pound of melted wax, if you want the candle to be slightly translucent. Remember, since this is your candle, you can change these steps as you wish.

Tie wick to a metal rod or a pencil lying on top of the mold. The wick should be long enough to reach the bottom of the candle. Thread the wick through the mold, pulling it through the hole in the bottom of the mold (this will be the top of the candle, so make the wick long). Make sure the wick is taut the entire time. A mold sealer will assist with this.

Once the wax and the crystals are melted, pour wax into the mold you desire (round, square, heart). Note: before pouring the wax into the mold, a small amount of vegetable oil on the mold walls will help with removal. Next, tap the sides of the mold to release air bubbles from the wax. Lower the mold into cool (not ice cold) water.

Leave the mold in the water for about six minutes. Takeout the insert and make sure the wick doesn't fall into the wax. Remove the mold from the water and leave it at room temperature for at least two hours (placing it in the refrigerator will speed the process). Once the wax is completely cooled, slide the wax out from the mold. Refill wax around the wick if needed and let it cool.

These steps can be altered by using different colors, fragrances, and molds. Follow the same steps if you'd like to fill a glass container (jar, martini glass) or a pottery piece (coffee mug, bowl) to make a candle.

Candles make creative gifts, especially when you make them on your own. Customize them for friends and family by using their favorite colors, scents, and containers. Consider mixing flowers or shells into the wax for a more personal touch.

This article, however, will focus on how to have a successful shopping trip with children in tow.

While it is certainly true that shopping with kids can be difficult at times, it is also possible to have an effective, efficient and fun shopping expedition with children. It does take a little advanced planning and cooperation on the children’s?behalf but it can be done. This article will cover a few of the basic tips for having a successful Christmas shopping trip with kids. Some of these tips include ensuring the children are well rested, taking frequent breaks, incorporating activities appropriate for children into the adventure and being prepared for any situation.

Depending on the age of the children, it might be critical to ensure the children are well rested at the start of the shopping trip and that the trip does not last so long that the child will be tired out before the end of the trip. Finally, it is important to be prepared for a variety of situations when Christmas shopping with kids. If your children are not yet potty trained, be sure to bring a supply of diapers and a change of clothes. Bringing along small toys and snacks is also helpful. The toys can be used to distract the child while standing in lines. Easy Fixes for Common House Problems

Squeaky floors and stairs are more of a nuisance than anything else. We put up with the annoying squeaking, and then suddenly one day, it's just time to fix it. The easiest fix is to purchase Squeeeeek-No-More screws, commonly available in home centers and hardware stores. Use them to tighten flooring to joists, or stair treads to stringers, and once tightened, their heads fall off leaving a 1/2 inch wide hole on the surface. These just disappear in carpeting, but for wood floors, the holes can be filled with wax filler.

When unclogging a bathroom sink, sometimes a plunger just doesn't do the trick. For those tough jobs, you'll need to remove the P-trap, get rid of the clog and reinstall the trap.

Important - Turn off the main water source. Then begin by unscrewing the ball-and-socket connection that holds the assembly together in the back of the sink (you may need a wrench); slide out the rod and remove the pop-up stopper. Usually whatever is clogging the trap will come out on the end of the stopper. Just clean it off and replace and tighten the ball-and-socket nut.

Shine up those stainless steel appliances and keep them that way. But, whatever you do, don't use stainless steel cleaners. Most of those specialty cleaners leave a thin oily film on the appliances that smear and attract dust and dirt. Instead, try using a glass cleaner that doesn't contain ammonia or alcohol. Try dissolving 2 tbsp. of baking soda in 1 quart of water for an effective, natural stainless steel or chrome cleaner. Make a paste of baking soda and water for those tough spots. A combination of 1 part vinegar to 1 part water works well also.

Scratches in woodwork can be hidden with little effort. For small jobs, get wax filler crayons in a slightly darker stain than the wood you are repairing. Rub the crayon over the scratch and lightly smooth over it with a spatula to leave a flat surface. For bigger jobs you can purchase a pigmented wax product such as Briwax, apply a thin coat and buff.

Odor control for the whole house can be accomplished without the use of dozens of scented air fresheners. This works if you have forced-air heating. Place a couple drops (the operative word here is a couple, too much and you will be overwhelmed) of vanilla extract on the filter. The blower will send the scent of vanilla throughout the entire house.

Make that noisy bathroom fan a thing of the past. Vent fans aren't supposed to be loud, so when they are, chances are some of the parts have loosened. The most common problem is the constant rattling of a loose cover. Simply remove the cover, bend the spring-loaded attachment brackets slightly so they grip a little tighter against the ceiling. While you're there, turn off the breaker (for your own safety) and vacuum the inside of the unit to remove any dust that may be inhibiting the fan blades and causing the motor to work harder than it needs to.

Although, today many moms are working over the internet, or with home businesses.

Mothers who work outside the home get their chance to be someone else other than 'mom.' They can concentrate on what they are trying to do much better than a mother who works at home. The only 'kids' they have in their hair are the ones they work with! Also, being away from your children more will foster a greater sense of independence in them. Disadvantages to working outside the home are obvious. You don't get as much time to spend with your children, and this can make you feel guilty or neglectful. 2. If you know you're not going to have time to cook one evening, prepare two dinners the night before and just reheat one the next night.

3. When preparing a meal using grated cheese, chopped onions, etc., prepare more than the recipe calls for and refrigerate the rest for another meal.

4. Clean your kitchen workspace as you go. When you're done there will be little left to clean.

5. On grocery shopping day, have your children help individually wrap their cookies, snacks, etc., for their lunches. Makes lunch preparation for the rest of the week a breeze and snacks don't disappear before lunches are made.

6. Don't hide your cookbooks away. Organize them where you can get to them easily, and you will use them a lot more.

7. Keep a notepad on the front of the refrigerator for your shopping list. When you run out of something write it on the list right away. Encourage family members to do the same.

8. Prepare favorite beverages like lemonade, tea, or Kool Aid in gallon-sized pitchers, and you won't have to make them as often.

Did you know that Life Itself involves using a mental sandwich to maintain balance and that you can use this to promote balance in your kids lives? The four parts of this mental sandwich are: part work, part play, part serious thinking, and part restful enjoyment. You can teach it to them with great benefit!

Although having a balanced life is splendid for kids, it also extends to all they do in their lives. Back in the 1980s, I worked for a man who started a business in his basement. Over the course of his working life, he built that business up to the point where he eventually sold the business for over $220 million dollars. After all his business success, he ended up selling it because none of his five children had been taught to run it after he retired. As a matter of fact, not one of his kids had been taught to work as he did. The suffered the misfortune of having too much bounty simply handed out to them.

Having money is great. Can you have too much? It's a trick question. Having too much isn't the issue. Although the family was blessed with an abundance of money, that ended up being a problem, with the underlying issue being an inability to balance life's challenges. The family was all about money and not much of anything else. What if, with all that money, he would have made them get jobs, earn things, work hard? A more balanced life for each of them would have resulted.

Another example of an unbalanced life follows: I used to work with a successful lawyer who, when he hit 50, became depressed. He had three children who were all off to college, and he told me he really didn't know them because the entire time they were growing up, he had been in meetings. He would work Monday through Friday until 9:00 at night. He would often work on Saturdays and Sundays. Being a success in your career is not a sin, but my friend lacked the skill of creating balance between his life and his work. His career was all that mattered. He would never agree with that, and his actions spoke louder than his words.

Whatever your children like to do, whether it's swimming, soccer or science projects, encourage them to work really hard at it, but then, teach them to walk away from it. If you teach your kids to take a break after they push really hard, they'll gain a long-distance perspective on it.

When you teach your kids the four parts of the mental sandwich of life, they can then use those laws to govern balance in their work for school, in the careers they'll end up in, and in their relationships - ultimately all the things that make their lives healthy, filled with joy, success and satisfaction. The key to a balanced life is using all four parts of the mental sandwich.

Much press is given aging Baby Boomers who send their children to college and in many cases, take care of their aging parents at the same time.

In my own case, my mother died after a stroke after a two month decline in 1987. I just graduated from my Nurse Practitioner program and came home on Father's Day.

This was the same day my mother had her stroke.

My father's gradual decline spanned over thirteen years. He had Alzheimer's Disease and was in and out of consciousness for most of that time. I dealt with Nursing Home administrators, and had to move him from one nursing home to another when he "ran out of money."

These kinds of experiences where you feel powerless to help the one person whom you love deeply from earliest memory, can teach lessons of surrender and a giving up of all past memory for a simple acceptance of that which is seen and unseen in this very moment.

My dad died seven years ago. I am reconciled with everything that ever happened between us, and all members of my family.

Enter Marybeth Kuznik, Executive Director of Vote Pa. She is dedicated to bringing voting (machine) reform to the state of Pennsylvania. She was one of the people who went to Ohio for the final vote count in Ohio in the 2004 election.

She verified what I have known since that time: G.W. Bush stole that election.

Marybeth and I met at the State Democratic Committee Meeting where our group, Progressives For Pennsylvania, held our health care reform conference in order to educate the State Democratic Party about HB 1660 and SB 300: The best state single payer plan in the country, at this time.

The conference was a success! People are excited by the Bill. As Michael Moore said in a recent conference call I was privileged to attend, the people are ready for it. Getting it through the legislative process is the challenge.

We were collecting health care delivery nightmare stories, and Marybeth gave us the most wrenching story I have ever heard, one that will soon be on You Tube and on our website, Progressives 4 Pennsylvania, as well as our P4P blog.

Merle Kuznik, Marybeth's 89 year old mother, broke her right hip after suffering a major stroke on her left side. The nursing home she was in, Wood Haven Care Center in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, insisted that Merle Kuznik apply for Medicaid to pay for expenses not paid by Medicare.

When the paperwork was not completed in a timely fashion, local Constables showed up to her nursing home room, with guns visible but in their holsters, and told her she would have to go to jail for 3 days, if she did not pay.

Marybeth, the savvy person that she is, went to KDKA TV and told the story.

Our bill, HB 1660 and SB 300 pays for long term care.

If our bill was in place NOW, Marybeth and Merle wouldn't be going through this degrading experience.

The question is, how many other of our elderly are experiencing similar experiences that are the worst kind of abuses in what we know is NOT a civil society until we get a single payer system instituted in our country?

How many suffer silently because, like Merle Kuznic, they cannot speak, or move because they are paralyzed? or worse, because they are mentally incapacitated?

This story underscores the reason why I fight tirelessly for a single payer health care delivery system.

For instance, your mother will only serve you the very best food available. A fast food restaurant or casual dining restaurant will usually serve you something cheap or processed. Most restaurants can’t compare to the TLC in every home cooked meal.

Additionally, with home cooked meals, you can quickly create meals that fit your specific preferences. Don’t like salt, not a problem, any other spice you like can be added to accommodate your taste preferences. If you are trying to eat healthy, you can choose the specific types of food and the amounts of each food in your dish. Some of today’s meals served at restaurants include so many preservatives food colorings, etc, you would probably run out of the restaurant if you saw the list of ingredients in a single meal.

For those that love home cooking, here are two of my favorite comfort foods; Grilled Cheese and Savory Meatloaf.

Homemade Grill Cheese 4 Slices of thick cut white bread 4 slices of American Cheese (I prefer Kraft yellow singles) ½ stick of butter Salt to taste

In a non-stick frying pan, melt the butter slowly and heat the frying pan on a low to medium flame. Place two slices of bread onto the butter and gently toast a bit. Ingredients: 2 pounds of ground hamburger beef ½ cup of Italian bread crumbs 1 egg beaten 1 can of French onion soup Salt and pepper to taste

Directions: In a large bowl, mix the beef with the bread crumbs, egg and can of soup. Mold into a loaf. Bake in an oven for about 1 hour at 350 degrees F. Once complete you can top with ketchup, chili or even barbecue sauce. One tip is to prepare a Meatloaf Mashed Potato Pie. Make mashed potatoes, cook the meatloaf thoroughly and then layer the mashed potatoes over the loaf and continue baking for about 10 to 15 minutes baking the mashed potatoes.

You can also add a firm cushion to your existing chairs since adding a bit of height will make it easier for them to sit down on and get up from.

• If your loved one is still able to use the phone you may want to purchase a telephone with large push buttons which will make dialing easy. Program all emergency numbers into speed dial, you can also write the numbers down and tape them to the wall by the phone. Another great idea is to obtain an emergency call system in case of fall or injury.

• Obtain a wireless intercom system so you can be easily reached if the person needs assistance.

• Make sure a television with remote control is accessible.

Kitchen

• Are your appliances in working order?

• Are your pots and pans, utensils and food easily accessible?

• Are all flammable materials away from the stove?

• Are sharp objects stored in a safe place?

• Is there adequate space to work?

• Call all kitchen outlets be reached safely?

• Is it easy to transfer food from the cooking area to the eating area?

• Are the sink faucets easy to turn on and off and easy to reach?

Bathroom

• Is the entrance to the bathroom easily accessed and free from clutter?

• Will your loved one be able to get in and out of the shower and bathtub safely on their own? If they can't you will have to install grab bars on both the inside and outside of the bath and shower. Remember that towel racks are not sturdy enough or meant to be used as grab handles.

• Make sure the shower or bathtub has a waterproof wireless intercom so assistance can be summoned if needed.

• Can your loved one shower safely standing up or is a chair needed? If you do need a chair, purchase one with non-skid pads.

• Have you placed non-skid strip pads and a bath mat in place?

• Have you installed a raised seat, a safety frame or a grab bar so your loved one can safely transfer to the toilet?

• Can the outlets, and light switches be easily reached?

• Do you have a nightlight for those midnight bathroom trips?

Bedroom

• You will have to consider purchasing an electric bed if your loved one has problems getting in and out of a regular bed safely.

• Can the bedside light be reached from bed?

• Is there a phone that can be reached from bed?

• Is there a wireless intercom that can be used to reach you in case of emergencies?

• Is there a clear path from the bed to the bathroom?

• If your loved one has difficulty getting in and out of bed you can install a trapeze bar for them to use.

• Do you have guardrails on the bed to ensure your loved one does not fall out during the night?

General Safety

• Do you have working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers throughout your home? It is always a good idea to periodically check to make sure they are working properly.

• Do you have emergency numbers such as the hospital, fire, and 911 by the phone, as well as any other emergency contact number?

• Have you placed night lights in every room of the house if your loved one is a night wanderer? The little bit of light they do give off will help to prevent tripping and falling.

Special Equipment That You May Need

• A hospital bed

• A cane and or walker

• A wheelchair

• A bedside commode

• A transfer lift – to help get in and out of bed

I think GPS systems are the greatest. (Global Position System) I know a few people who definitely need them. A few years ago we had guests driving from California to our home in Utah to stay over night. It was about a ten hour drive. I gave what I thought was excellent instructions and directions so they would not get lost. The night (early morning) my guests were to arrive I woke up at 3:00 a.m. with a start as Maggie hadn’t arrived. (She didn’t follow my directions, instead made up her own). From our place they were driving back to Washington D.C.. Her sister said she was afraid to take a nap because she was afraid she would wake up in Mexico. A GPS in her car will save her hours of frustration and time.

With the holidays arriving GPS is a great idea for all of us to have. The GPS I am talking about is: Great Planning System. By planning ahead we can have a happy stress free, joyous holiday season. Christmas can be one of the most stressful holidays. But with forethought and organization it can be fun and a holiday to look forward to instead of dreading.

First of all we need to decide what it is we want to get from the holidays. Do we want to have big dinners, entertain friends, and attend every function we are invited to, decorate, bake, spend time with family, send out Christmas cards, exchange neighbor gifts, establish traditions, give to charity or do something unique this year?

Once we have our goals in mind then we can move forward.

•Take some time and decide what is important for you to do this year for the holiday. Then write it down, map it out.

•Establish a time frame to accomplish each task. If it isn’t accomplished in the time we thought it would be, no beating up on ourselves or negative self talk. And if it doesn’t get done ask yourself what is the worst that can happen?

•Cook food ahead of time and freeze it. Some pies freeze well as do cookies. Check your recipes to see what else you can make and freeze.

•Plan on delegating. Who can put up the outdoor lights? Who can do the food shopping? Who can help decorate? Get a crew together to share in the fun.

•Plan a specific time to decorate, another to bake, another to deliver gifts—whatever you plan break it up into little jobs, a little at a time.

•If you send out Christmas cards, organize a basket with the cards, addresses and stamps, and then while watching a T.V. show address the envelopes on the commercials. Do cards in November to save time in December. OR Instead of sending cards, call your friends to wish them a Merry Christmas. Long distance calls have become so reasonable it may cost less than sending a card.

•Keep a notebook with the names of those you are giving gifts to. Check off the gift as it is purchased and make a note when it is wrapped and sent. You could do this on a spread sheet if you use the computer.

•If your family will let you mix up your traditions, try a new one, customize to your own personal preference.

Through all the planning remember this is to be a joyous season; don’t get sucked into thinking you have to do it all. Actually you don’t have to do any of it so have fun with what you decide you really want to do.

7 Home Security Tips To Protect Your Home And Family During The Holiday Season

The holiday season is ripe with festivities, goodwill and goodies. The season also comes with criminals and scam artists who want to enjoy and celebrate the holidays too. But they want to do it with your stuff and money. And it only takes you letting down your home security and holiday safety defenses one time for this type of scrooge to strike your home or family successfully.

Just one time!

Don't get so giddy with goodwill toward all mankind this season that you overlook sensible home security precautions and holiday safety tips. Here are seven home security tips to help you and your home stay safe and secure year-round but particularly during the holidays. Read these home security tips and see how many you practice

1.) Lock doors and windows when you leave your home (upstairs too)--no matter the length of time you'll be gone. Do this even if you're only going next door for a minute. It only takes a minute for someone watching your departure to enter your home and swipe your gifts or other belongings in easy reach and sight (like your holiday gifts under the tree).

2.) Everybody loves to see a pile of gifts under the Christmas tree, including potential burglars. Don't leave piles of gifts in clear view of glass doors and windows with open blinds, especially when you go out. Your gifts may not be there when you return. In their place may be shattered glass.

3.) Find out who is at the door before you open it. Be wary of couriers you don't know delivering unexpected items or door-to-door solicitors asking for your money. Ask for identification. Ask questions. Don't make hasty decisions when it comes to donating your money. And don't invite these strangers into your home or entryway. You step outside to speak with them. If it's after dark and you're alone, don't feel obligated to open the door at all. In fact, you don't even need to open your door to deliveries after dark. Most couriers are allowed by their companies to leave packages under a certain value at your doorstep (in typically low crime neighborhoods) without requesting your signature and they will do so. Or you can call to make arrangements to pick up packages yourself at the delivery center.

4.) When you're planning to be away on extended visits to relatives and friends, ask neighbors who will be home to collect your newspapers and mail. If you don't want to do that, ask your carriers to hold or stop the deliveries. They will. Also, some home security experts recommend that you utilize automatic timers to work your indoor and outdoor lighting, radio and televisions to give the appearance that someone is home. But they suggest you try to change the pattern of when and where these items turn on and off so someone watching your home doesn't see this pattern (a clear indication that no one is really home).

5.) If you're having a holiday party, move and secure your valuables in the common areas of your home. While you may know who you've invited to your home for a party, you may not know their date or friend very well. If guests have to walk through your bedroom to get to a bathroom, don't leave tempting items like expensive (or even sentimental) jewelry in plain sight.

6.) Don't leave extra house keys under flower pots, loose bricks, fake rocks or on or attached under the rims of your doors and windows. Don't leave spare house keys in your automobiles not secured in garages. Also, don't buy those awful "labeled" container gadgets in the store to "hide-a-key". If you can't give your spare key to a "trusted" relative and you must leave one outside for whatever reason when you're away from your home, try to be a bit more creative with its hiding spot. And make sure nobody is watching when you hide the key.

7.) Do a home security checkup. Put on your black hat and walk through your home, inside and out, with the eye of criminal. How would you break into your home if you had to do so and how long would it take you to do so? That's how long it will take a thief. An experienced thief with the right tools may take less time. You may want to have every member of your family do this home security walk-through including the children. Multiple minds will come up with more ideas. And what a perfect opportunity to talk about home security tips with your children.

Camcorder Techniques: How To Make Home Movies Your Family And Friends Will Be Excited To Watch

It's all got to start somewhere, so before you even charge your batteries, rewind those tapes or pack the car, take a seat and have a good think about what you are planning to shoot with your camcorder. 'Planning is the key' to a good production even if you're just shooting a small home movie.

It may sound like overkill if you head out the door to film your children at a sporting event or a family birthday party, but if you are planning to display the video to family and friends or even review it yourself for extended lengths of time, you will want AND need it to be as compelling as possible.

Now if you're filming a longer feature or being paid for a project, pre-production planning is essential. Both in streamlining the production phase of the project and displaying a professional image for your business. This is done by using basic filming techniques.

This may consist of sketching up a storyboard (to download a sample go to www.kmsvideo.com/Resources.htm), detailed notes or an interview/information session with the client.

"But I just want to shoot a home movie, not a production of Ben Hur!" I hear you say. OK then, let's bring it back to basics shall we?

First of all any video you take needs to have a beginning, a middle and an end. Simple as that!

Now, say you were to tell people at work on Monday morning an interesting event that happened on the weekend. How would you go about it? A bit of background information, then the main 'body' of the event and close it off with a punchline or resolution. You're telling a STORY.

Now go out with your video camera and- "Tell a Story on Film". Still unclear?

Here's a practical example... Timmy's first soccer final is on Saturday. It's a big occasion so you are going to capture it on video. Using our basic formula lets make it into a compelling story-

Beginning:

Open with a shot of the alarm clock, Timmy packing his bag, having breakfast then climbing into the car. All less than 5 seconds duration and if your camera has the function, set it to fade in and out to black.

Middle:

The team runs onto the field. Shots of Timmy chasing, dribbling and passing the ball at warm-up. Get the opening whistle and kick off, then move around the field for various angles and shots of Timmy. Film the coaches address to his players at half time followed by more game footage.

End:

Ref blows the full-time whistle and you video the teams shaking hands and walking off the field. Finally, close the video with a shot of our star and maybe a few words.

That's it! A very simplified version so here's a few tips to remember-

-Don't just keep the camera rolling in the hope that something interesting will happen

-move around so you're not always filming from the one spot

-use close-ups and wide shots alternatively

-don't talk over the footage, let the pictures tell the story

Now with a bit of pre-planning and good camcorder and filming techniques, you'll Have friends and family lining up to watch your home movies!

Isn't that what we all want? To put our family first?

Does it ever seem like every time you try to put your family first something happens that takes you away from them? We seem to be pulled in every direction and it continues to get harder and harder to place our family first. We all know the importance of our family. We all understand the responsibility we have as parents to raise our children "right". We all know that no one else can love our children like we can. No one understands our children like we do.

Placing your life in the proper order can be difficult to say the least. It seems as though each time you make your priority list within minutes it's obsolete. Things change so quickly throughout the day and even within the hour which makes life more difficult than any of us would like for it to be.

You may be wondering what qualifies me to be writing this article about putting your family first. I do know a little about fitting everything in during a 24-hour period of time. I know because I am the mother of 8 children. I have been blessed to have given birth to 7 of those -- one came with my husband. Let me explain...

When my husband and I met we had both recently left "bad" marriages. I had three children from my first marriage and he had a daughter who lives with her mother about 2000 miles away. A lot of our friends believed that those four children were enough but Dan and I felt there were to be more and we agreed to welcome each one. We also agreed that no matter what came up our family would always come first. Here's what we do to ensure our family comes first.

* We have a weekly family night where we can reconnect with our children. This is especially important when there are teenagers in the house.

* We join together for dinner every night. This is not a buffet style meal. We actually sit down and eat dinner together and take the time to enjoy the meal and the company.

* Dan and I have weekly date night. This gives us the opportunity as a couple to reconnect. There are some weeks when we get to our date night only to realize that we've barely spoken all week long because of busy schedules with kids, church and work. We know that we are the foundation of our home and that foundation must be strong.

Here's what we know. We know that as long as we put our family first we have all our needs covered. We have happy kids and a solid financial foundation. Blessings given to us for keeping our priorities straight.

Is it easy to put our family first? Not always. Sometimes the other "things" on our list need to get done and on the scale of importance they rate pretty high but when placed on the life long impact scale those other "things" rate pretty low. Our children's lives can't hang in the balance just because we need to get other things done. We must find a way to work around the family schedule. Our family must know their importance in our lives so they will in turn understand the importance of their family.

One of the many ways that you can go about balancing a family and a career is by setting aside time for both your family and your important career. By having your plans already made and in place, you are more likely to follow through with them. Your family, including your children and your partner, will likely be pleased with this follow through.

Although raising a family is often associated with spending time with your children, that is not all that motherhood is about. For that reason, you likely have a full plate. That plate may include grocery shopping, the preparation of family meals, as well as house cleaning. To reduce the stress associated with many of these tasks, as well as give you more quality time to spend with you family, you may want to consider hiring assistance. Whether you choose to hire a professional housekeeper or a landscaper to mow your yard for you, this extra time may come in handy.

Having worked as a full-time entertainer for over 6 years and performed at hundred's of children's birthday parties in people's homes, I have seen just about everything. From small intimate events of just the family to large extravagant affairs, birthday parties can be lots of fun for all attending.

This article will bring you some ideas on how you can plan a birthday party with budgets from $500 to $1,500.

Before we go into the budget, let us clear two major items that needs special attention: Venue and catering. The reason is that these items are very subjective in a party planning and their pricing varies a lot from companies to companies.

First, let us look at venue.

If you are living in a Condominium or a house, we highly recommend that you hold your party in the function or your house respectively. Having a party at or near your place would make logistic planning easier and of course, lower cost. You can save as much as $1,000 on venue alone if you host your party at your own premises.

Personally, I do not see the problem of hosting your party at your own premises. I have organized birthday party in a 3-room flat in few occasions!

If you are still uncomfortable with the idea, you can always book a room in venues like country clubs and hotels.

Booking of such venues are very tricky because different venues provide different prices. It is important to note that catering from their kitchen is a requirement for most venue bookings and most of them go by "cost per person" booking.

The average cost for hotel's function room bookings could range from $35 to $50 per person. The average cost for country clubs would range from $25 to $30 per person while other clubs like SAFRA clubs would range from $15 to $20 per person.

Thus, if you are looking at booking of venue (usually with catering), be sure to prepare budget of at least $600 for 20 children and 10 adults.

Next, let us look at catering.

If the party is scheduled during or close to dinner or lunch, serving food is essential. During a party, the children are usually having a so much fun, that serving a normal meal is not necessary or wanted. The children want to get back to party activities as soon as possible. Finger food like hotdogs, sandwiches, popcorns and chips are perfect. We also recommend packet drinks to minimize spilling. About half of school-age kids stay at home by themselves for part of the day. Allowing your child to stay home alone can be great for her confidence and self-esteem, and it’s a good way to teach self-reliance. But, on the other hand, it’s important that your child is ready for the extra responsibility. To make sure she is ready to stay alone and fend for herself for a few hours, take some time to talk to your child about safety, house rules, and her feelings about being home alone.

Is your child ready?

As a general rule, kids under 10 shouldn’t be left home alone. But age isn’t the only factor that you should use to decide if your child should stay home alone. You may have a mature 11-year-old who feels perfectly capable of holding down the fort, but your 13-year-old may quake at the thought of being home alone for an afternoon.

You should make your decision based on a realistic assessment of your child’s maturity level. Ask your child how she feels about being in the house alone – she’ll probably answer honestly. And ask yourself some questions, too:

• Is your child responsible enough to be in charge when you’re gone? Will she follow the rules if there’s nobody around to enforce them?

• Would your child be able to handle a small emergency if you weren’t there?

• Would your child be looking after younger siblings? Staying home alone is a bit different than babysitting. Is she responsible enough to look after a little sister or brother?

If you feel that your child can handle being home alone, it’s time to go over some basic safety tips together. In addition to following your house rules, it’s important that she knows how to stay safe and handle the unexpected.

Preparing to be home alone

If your child has never stayed home alone before, start small. Take a “test run” and begin with leaving her home alone while you make a quick trip to the grocery store or the mall. Before you leave for any length of time, use this checklist and talk with your child about some basic safety precautions:

• Keep doors and windows locked at all times. This is always a good idea but it is especially important for kids home alone.

• Set some ground rules: Is she allowed to play outside or have friends over while you’re not home? Establish a rule and stick to it.

• Tell your child who to call for help. Make sure your child has at least one trusted neighbor that he can call in an emergency.

• Remind your child that she should never open the door to a stranger. Some kids think it’s okay to open the door to a delivery person or even someone claiming to be a police officer. Your child should know not to let anyone in, no matter what they say.

• Make a list of important numbers and post it close to the phone. Your child should know all the emergency phone numbers, including your local police and fire stations. She should also know to call 911 if there is a real emergency.

• Decide whether your child is capable of using the stove or oven unsupervised. An older teen can probably handle cooking, but you may want to leave some healthy prepared snacks for younger kids.

• Always childproof your home before you leave kids alone. You should already have a gun safe if you own any firearms, and make sure that kids don’t have access to the liquor cabinet.

Instead use healthier floor alternatives as cork, solid wood, marmoleum, tiles, bamboo, and so on.

Always make use of strictly low-odor and non-toxic paints containing highly reduced amounts of VOCs such as paints comprising of just clay and pigments. Paints are usually loaded with high quantities of lead. Avoid using such paints completely.

Avoid using resins and glues that contain formaldehyde especially urea formaldehyde.

To build the foundation, walls and roof panels of a healthy home make use of thick, natural, hygroscopic and breathable plasters and stuccoes such as clay-treated wood chip placed over sand and fine gravel instead of using foam boards or poly vapor barriers. This renders efficient indoor humidity control thus preventing the formation of molds. In this way you can also avoid the accumulation of harmful radon gas inside your home.

Avoid building bedrooms/living rooms over the garage space of your house. Toxic gasoline fumes can outgas from the fuel tank of your car and infiltrate into the bedrooms.

Install carbon monoxide testers/detectors especially near furnaces, fireplaces, and garage areas of your home. Radon testers must be essentially placed in the basement areas of your home as this harmful radioactive gas occurring in soil can seep into your home through the foundation.

Rent Movies Online – Similar to renting games online you can now rent movies for a flat free and have them sent to your door. Going to the movies can be quite expensive these days. Renting them online and having family time is much less expensive and much more meaningful.

Joe and Emily live in Southern California with their three young children. Both work and must commute 2 hours daily on busy freeways, often not getting home until 7:30 PM, exhausted and depleted.

Stressed, they have little patience for the antics of their young children. This results in frequent shouting matches, defiance on the part of the children, and escalating family tension.

As the above illustrates, stress is often an underlying cause of anger in family members. Sometimes the stress is caused by events outside of the family which family members bring into the home. In other cases, the behavior of family members creates stress and tension in the home. In either case, it becomes a problem when parents find themselves constantly yelling at their children or disagreeing with each other on parenting strategies.

In the meantime their children continue to do what they please—or continue bickering and fighting with each other. When not addressed, stress becomes a major factor in marital unhappiness and, ultimately, divorce.

Stress and family members Joe and Emily both suffered individual stress symptoms. These included fatigue, irritability, angry outbursts, headaches and a discontent with their lives. They began feeling increasingly distant from each other.

Their children were also stressed-out; tired, irritable, cranky, and demanding of attention. They often fought with each other and deliberately did things to get each other in trouble with their parents.

Symptoms of family stress

Just as individuals can become overloaded and stressed-out, so can families. To understand how this can happen, we must remember that families such as Joe and Emily’s are the basic building block of our society (like most societies).

Part 2: How empathy reduces family anger

Families consist of two or more people with shared goals and values and with a long term commitment to each other. Families are supposed to help children learn how to become responsible, successful, happy, and well-adjusted adults. When this no longer happens due to stress, the family unit becomes dysfunctional —as the family no longer serves its purpose fully, easily or consistently.

Individual isolation

We can recognize the dysfunctional family by noting that parents and children no longer turn to each other for support, encouragement, guidance, or even love. Such family members may continue to live in the same house—but not feel emotionally attached to each other. They fail to view their family as a warm place to retreat to from the stresses and demands of the outside world.

Stress-Guard your family

Tip #1- Teach your children “resiliency” —the ability to handle stress and respond more positively to difficult events. Help your children practice “bouncing back” by emphasizing the importance of having friends and being a friend; setting new goals and plans to reach them, and believing in themselves.

Tip #2– Commit to stable family rituals.

Have a way to leave each other in the morning, and to re-connect in the evening; have a Sunday morning ritual or a Friday night family pizza ritual. Rituals create a sense of security and predictability —both excellent stress buffers.

Tip #3- Model and teach your children conflict resolution skills.

Children learn how to handle conflict by watching their parents. All couples have conflicts; better parents model good conflict resolution skills for their children. These skills include compromise, calm discussion, and focus on problem-solving. Encourage your children to find a way to resolve their own conflicts rather than jumping in and punishing one or the other child whom you think (perhaps, wrongly) is the troublemaker.

Tip #4– Introduce a family “better health” plan.

This includes proper nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep each night. The family may also want to look at time management—and explore how how better time management might reduce both personal and family stress.

Tip #5- Minimize criticism and take time to support each other each day.

Excessive criticism is extremely harmful to both children and parents. Emotional support by family members is an extremely important buffer to family stress.

Mainstream holidays in the UK have changed enormously in the last ten years as companies and tourism businesses struggled to cope with the constantly changing customer requirements. This has presented the tourism industry with a series of new challenges that are currently sculpting a new type of travel business.

To understand how the industry has changed and grown it is necessary to look at the internal and external influences that have forced this shift in the UK market These factors can be attributed to a number of changes in society, changes in technology and infrastructural developments that have result in the world becoming a much smaller place. However, to look at the first big change we need to go back 25 years.

The UK holiday market was still in a relatively secure position, with a large percentage of its holidaymakers still taking UK breaks in cottages, holiday parks, B&B’s and hotels. Then in the 80’s cheap package holidays had an enormous effect on the UK mass-market holiday businesses as value for money, guaranteed sunshine and better quality accommodation and food resulted in an exodus. During this period holiday businesses saw a massive fall in guests. This resulted in drastic changes in the way UK holidays were marketed and was the first in a series of challenges – that became opportunities – for the industry.

But it wasn’t simply the advent of the overseas cheap package holidays that presented companies with challenges and opportunities. Arguably the last five years has seen the greatest level of change in the UK market.

Changes in society during the last 15 years have had a great impact on the way people choose to book and take their holidays. The family unit and its 2.5 children changed. More people got divorced and couples had children much later in life as their career took priority. The traditional UK family holiday had therefore changed as their customers social circumstances changed.

These weren’t the only social changes. Working adults increasingly earned more money, but more so than ever before they had less opportunity to spend that money, and were in need of time to relax and enjoy their holidays. Again UK holiday companies and business had to adjust to this trend to ensure that their products matched the changes in the customer requirements.

Another major factor in the changing in UK holidays was a shift in booking patterns. As long as anyone could remember holidays had been booked directly through the holiday outlet or via travel agents – often 6/12 months in advance of that break. In 2000 this pattern changed forever.

The advent of the internet, and the continued growth of home PC’s across all markets, has had a revolutionary impact on the holiday market. For the first time people could independently search for, and book, their perfect holiday anywhere in the world. The could also leave everything to the last minute and decide to take holidays based on the five day forecast – rather than hoping the weather would be nice next June!

The final, and possibly the most important, factor in the changes to the UK market was the arrival of the ‘low-cost operator’. So not only could you book late using the internet, you now had the freedom to go anywhere (roughly with a five hour flight time) at the drop of the hat. The short break market, which had become increasingly important to the UK holiday businesses as traditional one and two weeks holidays dwindled, was facing competition with any city destination in Europe. Now a B&B in Bath had to compete with a hotel in Budapest.

So all of these factors, coupled with changes in customer needs, resulted in a whole new series of challenges for the UK tourism industry.

Boutique hotels brilliant demonstrate this new way of thinking – a style of UK holiday that was only very niche has responded to the potential of young couples and empty nesters to offer a stylish and unique hotel experience. This may be a better option as it would allow for built in compartments for cords, DVDs, VHS tapes, DVD player storage, and more. Inside the cabinet, a custom mount could be created for the plasma TV. Add to this some remote control doors on the cabinet and one could have oneself a pretty Godfather-esque setup.

In conclusion, if you wish to become the talk of the neighborhood with your brand new home theater or home entertainment center, be sure to have the finest centerpiece available with a large, high quality plasma television.

Amazon Kicks It Off with Movie Downloads

Amazon announced the launch of their new video download service ? Amazon Unbox. This new service will allow users to download video from thousands of TV show, movies and more using Amazon?s online store.

Everyone expected Apple to launch a video download service first. After the launch of Amazon?s Unbox, Apple has schedule a news conference to announce the expansion of their popular iTunes digital audio store to soon offer a similar service. "Our goal is to offer consumers great choice," says Bill Carr, Amazon's vice president of digital media. Amazon's 59 million active customers can now order DVD movies shipped to their door or "choose unboxed movies and download directly to their PC," he says.

Amazon says it will make available thousands of movies and TV shows from 30 various Hollywood studios. TV episodes will run $2 an episode, whereas movie downloads can be purchased at a rate between $8 and $15 and rentals can be made between $3 and $4. "It's a natural way to keep loyal customers coming back," says retail industry analyst Dan Geiman of McAdams Wright Ragen.

"It's a PC-only experience," says JupiterResearch analyst Michael Gartenberg. "There's no way to burn content to a DVD for playback. Without a really interesting device to use this with besides the PC, it's going to be a challenge for them."

Apple states they will make a major announcement about their iTunes store on Tuesday, which already allows for TV show downloads and is the leading music download service on the Internet. They said the addition of movie downloads will greatly increase the service for their current loyal iTunes customers. Apple?s new video service could take over Amazon?s because they will allow their content to be burned onto DVDs. "This could be the biggest event in consumer media since Napster," Munster says. "Burning is critical. Burning opens up the market."
